In Conjunction Yuganaddhasutta
So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time Venerable Änanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. There Änanda addressed the mendicants: Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āReverends, mendicants!ā āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti.
āReverend,ā they replied. āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato Änandassa paccassosuį¹. Änanda said this: ÄyasmÄ Änando etadavoca:
āReverends, all of the monks and nuns who declare in my presence that they have attained perfection, did so by one or other of four paths. āYo hi koci, Ävuso, bhikkhu vÄ bhikkhunÄ« vÄ mama santike arahattappattiį¹ byÄkaroti, sabbo so catÅ«hi maggehi, etesaį¹ vÄ aƱƱatarena.
What four? Katamehi catūhi?
Take a mendicant who develops serenity before discernment. Idha, Ävuso, bhikkhu samathapubbaį¹ gamaį¹ vipassanaį¹ bhÄveti. As they do so, the path is born in them. Tassa samathapubbaį¹ gamaį¹ vipassanaį¹ bhÄvayato maggo saƱjÄyati. They cultivate, develop, and make much of it. So taį¹ maggaį¹ Äsevati bhÄveti bahulÄ«karoti. By doing so, they give up the fetters and eliminate the underlying tendencies. Tassa taį¹ maggaį¹ Äsevato bhÄvayato bahulÄ«karoto saį¹yojanÄni pahÄ«yanti, anusayÄ byantÄ«honti.
Another mendicant develops discernment before serenity. Puna caparaį¹, Ävuso, bhikkhu vipassanÄpubbaį¹ gamaį¹ samathaį¹ bhÄveti. As they do so, the path is born in them. Tassa vipassanÄpubbaį¹ gamaį¹ samathaį¹ bhÄvayato maggo saƱjÄyati.
Another mendicant develops serenity and discernment in conjunction. Puna caparaį¹, Ävuso, bhikkhu samathavipassanaį¹ yuganaddhaį¹ bhÄveti. As they do so, the path is born in them. Tassa samathavipassanaį¹ yuganaddhaį¹ bhÄvayato maggo saƱjÄyati.
Another mendicantās heart is seized by restlessness to realize the teaching. Puna caparaį¹, Ävuso, bhikkhuno dhammuddhaccaviggahitaį¹ mÄnasaį¹ hoti. But there comes a time when their mind is stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samÄdhi. Hoti so, Ävuso, samayo yaį¹ taį¹ cittaį¹ ajjhattameva santiį¹į¹hati sannisÄ«dati ekodi hoti samÄdhiyati. The path is born in them. Tassa maggo saƱjÄyati.
All of the monks and nuns who declare in my presence that they have attained perfection, did so by one or other of these four paths.ā Yo hi koci, Ävuso, bhikkhu vÄ bhikkhunÄ« vÄ mama santike arahattappattiį¹ byÄkaroti, sabbo so imehi catÅ«hi maggehi, etesaį¹ vÄ aƱƱatarenÄāti.
