The training rule on lying down on the same bed 31. Ekamañcatuvaṭṭanasikkhāpada

Origin story

At one time when the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery, Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. two nuns were lying down on the same bed. Tena kho pana samayena bhikkhuniyo dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭenti. When people walking about the dwellings saw this, they complained and criticized them, Manussā vihāracārikaṁ āhiṇḍantā passitvā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“How can two nuns lie down on the same bed? They’re just like householders who indulge in worldly pleasures!” “kathañhi nāma bhikkhuniyo dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭessanti, seyyathāpi gihiniyo kāmabhoginiyo”ti.

The nuns heard the complaints of those people, Assosuṁ kho bhikkhuniyo tesaṁ manussānaṁ ujjhāyantānaṁ khiyyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ. and the nuns of few desires complained and criticized them, Yā tā bhikkhuniyo appicchā …pe… tā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“How can nuns do this?” … “kathañhi nāma bhikkhuniyo dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭessantī”ti …pe… “Is it true, monks, that nuns do this?” “saccaṁ kira, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭentī”ti?

“It’s true, Sir.” “Saccaṁ, bhagavā”ti.

The Buddha rebuked them … Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe… “How can nuns do this? kathañhi nāma, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭessanti. This will affect people’s confidence …” … Netaṁ, bhikkhave, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe… “And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this: evañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddisantu—

Final ruling

‘If two nuns lie down on the same bed, they commit an offense entailing confession.’” “Yā pana bhikkhuniyo dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭeyyuṁ, pācittiyan”ti.

Definitions

Two: Yā panāti: whoever … yā yādisā …pe…
Nuns: bhikkhuniyoti: fully ordained is what is meant. upasampannāyo vuccanti.
If two lie down on the same bed: Dve ekamañce tuvaṭṭeyyunti: if, when one is lying down, the other lies down, they commit an offense entailing confession. ekāya nipannāya aparā nipajjati, āpatti pācittiyassa. If both lie down together, they commit an offense entailing confession. Ubho vā nipajjanti, āpatti pācittiyassa. Every time they get up and then lie down again, they commit an offense entailing confession. Uṭṭhahitvā punappunaṁ nipajjanti, āpatti pācittiyassa.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: Anāpatti—if, when one is lying down, the other sits down; ekāya nipannāya aparā nisīdati, if both sit down together; ubho vā nisīdanti, if they are insane; ummattikānaṁ, if they are the first offenders. ādikammikānanti.

The first training rule is finished. Paṭhamasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.

The training rule on lying down on the same bed

Origin story

At one time when the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery, two nuns were lying down on the same bed. When people walking about the dwellings saw this, they complained and criticized them, “How can two nuns lie down on the same bed? They’re just like householders who indulge in worldly pleasures!”

The nuns heard the complaints of those people, and the nuns of few desires complained and criticized them, “How can nuns do this?” … “Is it true, monks, that nuns do this?”

“It’s true, Sir.”

The Buddha rebuked them … “How can nuns do this? This will affect people’s confidence …” … “And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this:

Final ruling

‘If two nuns lie down on the same bed, they commit an offense entailing confession.’”

Two:: whoever …
Nuns:: fully ordained is what is meant.
If two lie down on the same bed:: if, when one is lying down, the other lies down, they commit an offense entailing confession. If both lie down together, they commit an offense entailing confession. Every time they get up and then lie down again, they commit an offense entailing confession.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: if, when one is lying down, the other sits down; if both sit down together; if they are insane; if they are the first offenders.
