The training rule on raw grain 7. Āmakadhaññasikkhāpada

Origin story

At one time when the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery, Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. it was the harvest season. At that time the nuns had asked for raw grain, which they then carried to town. At the town gate they were detained and told, Tena kho pana samayena bhikkhuniyo sassakāle āmakadhaññaṁ viññāpetvā nagaraṁ atiharanti dvāraṭṭhāne—“Venerables, give a share.” “dethāyye, bhāgan”ti.

After being released, Palibundhetvā muñciṁsu. they went to the nuns’ dwelling place and told the nuns what had happened. Atha kho tā bhikkhuniyo upassayaṁ gantvā bhikkhunīnaṁ etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ. The nuns of few desires complained and criticized them, Yā tā bhikkhuniyo appicchā …pe… tā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—“How could nuns ask for raw grain?” … “kathañhi nāma bhikkhuniyo āmakadhaññaṁ viññāpessantī”ti …pe… “Is it true, monks, that nuns did this?” “saccaṁ kira, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo āmakadhaññaṁ viññāpentī”ti?

“It’s true, Sir.” “Saccaṁ, bhagavā”ti.

The Buddha rebuked them, Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe… “How could nuns do this? kathañhi nāma, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo āmakadhaññaṁ viññāpessanti. This will affect people’s confidence …” … Netaṁ, bhikkhave, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe… “And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this: evañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddisantu—

Final ruling

‘If a nun asks for or has someone else ask for raw grain, or she roasts it or has it roasted, or she pounds it or has it pounded, or she cooks it or has it cooked, and she then eats it, she commits an offense entailing confession.’” “Yā pana bhikkhunī āmakadhaññaṁ viññatvā vā viññāpetvā vā bhajjitvā vā bhajjāpetvā vā koṭṭetvā vā koṭṭāpetvā vā pacitvā vā pacāpetvā vā bhuñjeyya, pācittiyan”ti.

rice, barley, wheat, millet, wild gram, kodo millet. sāli vīhi yavo godhumo kaṅgu varako kudrusako.

she gets someone else to ask. aññaṁ viññāpetvā.
Roasts: Bhajjitvāti
she roasts it herself. sayaṁ bhajjitvā.

she gets someone else to roast it. aññaṁ bhajjāpetvā.
Pounds: Koṭṭetvāti
she pounds it herself. sayaṁ koṭṭetvā.
Has it pounded: Koṭṭāpetvāti
she gets someone else to pound it. aññaṁ koṭṭāpetvā.
Cooks: Pacitvāti
she cooks it herself. sayaṁ pacitvā.
Has it cooked: Pacāpetvāti
she gets someone else to cook it. aññaṁ pacāpetvā.

If she receives it with the intention of eating it, she commits an offense of wrong conduct. “Bhuñjissāmī”ti paṭiggaṇhāti, āpatti dukkaṭassa. For every mouthful, she commits an offense entailing confession. Ajjhohāre ajjhohāre āpatti pācittiyassa.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: Anāpatti—if she does it because she is sick; ābādhapaccayā, if she asks for vegetables; aparaṇṇaṁ viññāpeti, if she is insane; ummattikāya, if she is the first offender. ādikammikāyāti.

The seventh training rule is finished. Sattamasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
