In Oneself Ajjhattasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

ā€œMendicants, when what exists, because of grasping what, do pleasure and pain arise in oneself?ā€ ā€œKismiṁ nu kho, bhikkhave, sati, kiṁ upādāya uppajjati ajjhattaṁ sukhadukkhanā€ti?

ā€œWhen form exists, because of grasping form, pleasure and pain arise in oneself. ā€œrÅ«pe kho, bhikkhave, sati rÅ«paṁ upādāya uppajjati ajjhattaṁ sukhadukkhaṁ. When feeling … Vedanāya sati …pe… perception … saƱƱāya sati … choices … saį¹…khāresu sati … consciousness exists, because of grasping consciousness, pleasure and pain arise in oneself. viññāṇe sati viññāṇaṁ upādāya uppajjati ajjhattaṁ sukhadukkhaṁ.

What do you think, mendicants? Taṁ kiṁ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Is form permanent or impermanent?ā€ rÅ«paṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vÄā€ti?

ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€ ā€œAniccaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€ ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vÄā€ti?

ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€ ā€œDukkhaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œBut by not grasping what’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, would pleasure and pain arise in oneself?ā€ ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, api nu taṁ anupādāya uppajjeyya ajjhattaṁ sukhadukkhanā€ti?

ā€œNo, sir.ā€ ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œIs feeling … ā€œVedanā …pe… perception … saƱƱā … choices … saį¹…khārā … consciousness permanent or impermanent?ā€ viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vÄā€ti?

ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€ ā€œAniccaṁ, bhanteā€.
