Not Mortifying Atapanīyasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

ā€œThese two things, mendicants, are not mortifying. ā€œDveme, bhikkhave, dhammā atapanÄ«yā. What two? Katame dve? It’s when someone has done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has not done bad things, violence and sin. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco katakalyāṇo hoti, katakusalo, katabhÄ«ruttāṇo, akatapāpo, akataluddo, akatakibbiso. Thinking, ā€˜I have done good things’, they’re not mortified. Thinking, ā€˜I haven’t done bad things’, they’re not mortified. So ā€˜kataṁ me kalyāṇan’tipi na tappati, ā€˜akataṁ me pāpan’tipi na tappati. These are the two things that are not mortifying.ā€ Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā atapanÄ«yāā€ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

ā€œHaving given up bad conduct ā€œKāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā, by way of body, vacÄ«duccaritāni ca; speech, and mind, Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā, and whatever else is corrupt; yaƱcaƱƱaṁ dosasaƱhitaṁ.

not having done bad deeds, Akatvākusalaṁ kammaṁ, and having done many good, katvāna kusalaṁ bahuṁ; when their body breaks up, that wise person Kāyassa bhedā sappaƱƱo, is reborn in heaven.ā€ saggaṁ so upapajjatÄ«ā€ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Catutthaṁ.
