Not Mortifying Atapanīyasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āThese two things, mendicants, are not mortifying. āDveme, bhikkhave, dhammÄ atapanÄ«yÄ. What two? Katame dve? Itās when someone has done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has not done bad things, violence and sin. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco katakalyÄį¹o hoti, katakusalo, katabhÄ«ruttÄį¹o, akatapÄpo, akataluddo, akatakibbiso. Thinking, āI have done good thingsā, theyāre not mortified. Thinking, āI havenāt done bad thingsā, theyāre not mortified. So ākataį¹ me kalyÄį¹anātipi na tappati, āakataį¹ me pÄpanātipi na tappati. These are the two things that are not mortifying.ā Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammÄ atapanÄ«yÄāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āHaving given up bad conduct āKÄyaduccaritaį¹ hitvÄ, by way of body, vacÄ«duccaritÄni ca; speech, and mind, Manoduccaritaį¹ hitvÄ, and whatever else is corrupt; yaƱcaƱƱaį¹ dosasaƱhitaį¹.
not having done bad deeds, AkatvÄkusalaį¹ kammaį¹, and having done many good, katvÄna kusalaį¹ bahuį¹; when their body breaks up, that wise person KÄyassa bhedÄ sappaƱƱo, is reborn in heaven.ā saggaį¹ so upapajjatÄ«āti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
Catutthaį¹.
