Without Placing the Mind Avitakkasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Venerable Ānanda saw Venerable Sāriputta and said to him: Addasā kho āyasmā ānando …pe… āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œReverend Sāriputta, your faculties are so very clear, and your complexion is pure and bright. ā€œvippasannāni kho te, āvuso sāriputta, indriyāni; parisuddho mukhavaṇṇo pariyodāto. What meditation were you practicing today?ā€ Katamenāyasmā sāriputto ajja vihārena vihāsÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œReverend, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected were stilled, I entered and remained in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected. ā€œIdhāhaṁ, āvuso, vitakkavicārānaṁ vÅ«pasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ samādhijaṁ pÄ«tisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharāmi. But it didn’t occur to me: Tassa mayhaṁ, āvuso, na evaṁ hoti: ā€˜I am entering the second absorption’ or ā€˜I have entered the second absorption’ or ā€˜I am emerging from the second absorption’.ā€ ā€˜ahaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajjāmī’ti vā ā€˜ahaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpanno’ti vā ā€˜ahaṁ dutiyā jhānā vuį¹į¹hito’ti vāā€ti.

ā€œThat must be because Venerable Sāriputta has long ago totally eradicated I-making, mine-making, and the underlying tendency to conceit. Tathā hi panāyasmato sāriputtassa dÄ«gharattaṁ ahaį¹…kāramamaį¹…kāramānānusayā susamÅ«hatā. That’s why it didn’t occur to you: Tasmā āyasmato sāriputtassa na evaṁ hoti: ā€˜I am entering the second absorption’ or ā€˜I have entered the second absorption’ or ā€˜I am emerging from the second absorption’.ā€ ā€œā€˜ahaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajjāmī’ti vā ā€˜ahaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpanno’ti vā ā€˜ahaṁ dutiyā jhānā vuį¹į¹hito’ti vāā€ti.

Dutiyaṁ.
