Impermanence (2nd) Dutiyaaniccasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

ā€œMendicants, form is impermanent. ā€œRÅ«paṁ, bhikkhave, aniccaṁ. What’s impermanent is suffering. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ; What’s suffering is not-self. yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā; And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’ yadanattā taṁ ā€˜netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ sammappaƱƱāya daį¹­į¹­habbaṁ.

Feeling is impermanent … Vedanā aniccā …

Perception is impermanent … saƱƱā aniccā …

Choices are impermanent … saį¹…khārā aniccā …

Consciousness is impermanent. viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ. What’s impermanent is suffering. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ; What’s suffering is not-self. yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā; And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’ yadanattā taṁ ā€˜netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ sammappaƱƱāya daį¹­į¹­habbaṁ.

Seeing truly with right understanding like this, they have no theories about the past. Evametaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ sammappaƱƱāya passato pubbantānudiį¹­į¹­hiyo na honti. Not having theories about the past, they have no theories about the future. Pubbantānudiį¹­į¹­hÄ«naṁ asati, aparantānudiį¹­į¹­hiyo na honti. Not having theories about the future, they don’t obstinately stick to them. Aparantānudiį¹­į¹­hÄ«naṁ asati, thāmaso parāmāso na hoti. Not misapprehending, the mind becomes dispassionate towards form, Thāmase parāmāse asati rÅ«pasmiṁ … feeling, vedanāya … perception, saƱƱāya … choices, saį¹…khāresu … and consciousness; it’s freed from defilements by not grasping. viññāṇasmiṁ cittaṁ virajjati vimuccati anupādāya āsavehi.

Being free, it’s stable. Being stable, it’s content. Being content, they’re not anxious. Not being anxious, they personally become extinguished. Vimuttattā į¹­hitaṁ. Ṭhitattā santusitaṁ. Santusitattā na paritassati. Aparitassaṁ paccattaƱƱeva parinibbāyati.

They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€™ā€ ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātÄ«ā€ti.
