Gratification (2nd) Dutiyaassādasutta
At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
“Mendicants, I went in search of form’s gratification, “Rūpassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it. Yo rūpassa assādo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of form’s gratification. Yāvatā rūpassa assādo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of form’s drawback, Rūpassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ādīnavapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it. Yo rūpassa ādīnavo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of form’s drawback. Yāvatā rūpassa ādīnavo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of form’s escape, Rūpassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, nissaraṇapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it. Yaṁ rūpassa nissaraṇaṁ tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of form’s escape. Yāvatā rūpassa nissaraṇaṁ paññāya me taṁ sudiṭṭhaṁ.
I went in search of the gratification of feeling … Vedanāyāhaṁ, bhikkhave … perception … saññāyāhaṁ, bhikkhave … choices … saṅkhārānāhaṁ, bhikkhave … and consciousness, viññāṇassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it. Yo viññāṇassa assādo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of consciousness’s gratification. Yāvatā viññāṇassa assādo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of consciousness’s drawback, Viññāṇassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ādīnavapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it. Yo viññāṇassa ādīnavo tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of consciousness’s drawback. Yāvatā viññāṇassa ādīnavo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. I went in search of consciousness’s escape, Viññāṇassāhaṁ, bhikkhave, nissaraṇapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. and I found it. Yaṁ viññāṇassa nissaraṇaṁ tadajjhagamaṁ. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of consciousness’s escape. Yāvatā viññāṇassa nissaraṇaṁ paññāya me taṁ sudiṭṭhaṁ.
As long as I didn’t truly understand these five grasping aggregates’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening … Yāvakīvañcāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ assādañca assādato ādīnavañca ādīnavato nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ nābbhaññāsiṁ …pe… But when I did truly understand these five grasping aggregates’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening … abbhaññāsiṁ.
Knowledge and vision arose in me: Ñāṇañca pana me dassanaṁ udapādi: ‘My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.’” ‘akuppā me vimutti; ayamantimā jāti; natthi dāni punabbhavo’”ti.
Chaṭṭhaṁ.
