Controverted Point: Whether the subjective sense-desires or the objective five fields of sense constitute kāma's?Kāmakathā

Controverted PointPañcevāyatanā kāmāti? Thisparagraph isverbatim=Kv 8.3 =Kv 8.3 “Hence sensuality consists in only the five fields of sense-object”.Āmantā. Theravādin:But was it not also said by the Exalted One:Nanu atthi tappaṭisaṁyutto chandoti? “There are these fivefold pleasures of sense,bhikkhus: which are the five? Objects desirable,… adapted to sense-desires(kāma), and seductive are cognizable by sight, hearing, etc.… five kinds ofobjects associated withsense-pleasure. Nevertheless,bhikkhus, these are not sense-desires; they are called in the Ariyan disciplineobjects ofsense-pleasures(kāmaguṇā). Pañcevāyatanā kāmāti? Āmantā. Nanu vuttaṁ bhagavatā—“pañcime, bhikkhave, kāmaguṇā. Katame pañca? Cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā …pe… kāyaviññeyyā phoṭṭhabbā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā—ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca kāmaguṇā. Api ca, bhikkhave, nete kāmā kāmaguṇā nāmete ariyassa vinaye vuccan”ti—

“Saṅkapparāgo purisassa kāmo, Na te kāmā yāni citrāni loke; Saṅkapparāgo purisassa kāmo, Tiṭṭhanti citrāni tatheva loke; Athettha dhīrā vinayanti chandan”ti.

Attheva suttantoti? Āmantā. Tena hi na vattabbaṁ—“pañcevāyatanā kāmā”ti.
