Deceit and Flattery Paį¹hamajananakuhanasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āMendicants, this spiritual life is not lived for the sake of deceiving people or flattering them, nor for the benefit of possessions, honor, or popularity, nor thinking, āSo let people know about me!ā āNayidaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹ vussati janakuhanatthaį¹, na janalapanatthaį¹, na lÄbhasakkÄrasilokÄnisaį¹satthaį¹, na āiti maį¹ jano jÄnÄtÅ«āti. This spiritual life is lived for the sake of restraint and giving up.ā Atha kho idaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹ vussati saį¹varatthaƱceva pahÄnatthaƱcÄāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThe Buddha taught the spiritual life āSaį¹varatthaį¹ pahÄnatthaį¹, not because of tradition, brahmacariyaį¹ anÄ«tihaį¹; but for the sake of restraint and giving up, Adesayi so bhagavÄ, and because it culminates in extinguishment. nibbÄnogadhagÄminaį¹.
This is the path followed by the great souls, Esa maggo mahattehi, the great seers. anuyÄto mahesibhi; Those who practice it Ye ye taį¹ paį¹ipajjanti, as it was taught by the Buddha yathÄ buddhena desitaį¹; doing the teacherās bidding, Dukkhassantaį¹ karissanti, make an end of suffering.ā satthusÄsanakÄrinoāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
