“All phenomena are impermanent, Aniccā sabbe saṅkhārā, And suffering, nonself, made up; dukkhānattā ca saṅkhatā; Indeed the description extinguishment, Nibbānañceva paññatti, Is the conviction about nonself. anattā iti nicchayā.
When the Buddha moon has not appeared, Buddhacande anuppanne, When the Buddha sun has not yet risen; buddhādicce anuggate; Then even the name is not known, Tesaṁ sabhāgadhammānaṁ, Of the things that are the same as those. nāmamattaṁ na nāyati.
Having done many difficult things, Dukkaraṁ vividhaṁ katvā, Having fulfilled the perfections; pūrayitvāna pāramī; The Great Heroes emerge, Uppajjanti mahāvīrā, Endowed with vision, in this world with its supreme beings. cakkhubhūtā sabrahmake.
They instruct in the True Teaching, Te desayanti saddhammaṁ, That ends suffering and brings happiness; dukkhahāniṁ sukhāvahaṁ; Angīrasa, the Sakyan Sage, Aṅgīraso sakyamuni, Who has compassion for all beings. sabbabhūtānukampako.
The best of all creatures, the lion, Sabbasattuttamo sīho, Taught the three Collections: piṭake tīṇi desayi; The Discourses, and the Philosophy, Suttantamabhidhammañca, And the Monastic Law, of great quality. vinayañca mahāguṇaṁ.
Thus the true Teaching carries on, Evaṁ nīyati saddhammo, So long as the Monastic Law remains; vinayo yadi tiṭṭhati; As well as both Analyses, Ubhato ca vibhaṅgāni, The Chapters, and the Key Terms—khandhakā yā ca mātikā.
A garland bound, Mālā suttaguṇeneva, By the quality of the string of the Compendium; parivārena ganthitā; In this very Compendium, Tasseva parivārassa, Originations are determined. samuṭṭhānaṁ niyato kataṁ.
Combination and source are another, Sambhedaṁ nidānañcaññaṁ, Which are pointed out in the list below. sutte dissanti upari; Therefore, they should train in the Compendium, Tasmā sikkhe parivāraṁ, Those who love the Teaching and are highly virtuous.” dhammakāmo supesaloti.
The thirteen originations 2. Terasasamuṭṭhāna
“Laid down in the two analyses, Vibhaṅge dvīsu paññattaṁ, They recite on the observance day; uddisanti uposathe; I will declare the origination, Pavakkhāmi samuṭṭhānaṁ, According to the method: listen to me. yathāñāyaṁ suṇātha me.
The first offense entailing expulsion, Pārājikaṁ yaṁ paṭhamaṁ, And then the second; dutiyañca tato paraṁ; Matchmaking and pressing, Sañcarittānubhāsanañca, And an extra robe. atirekañca cīvaraṁ.
Wool, memorizing the Teaching, Lomāni padasodhammo, True, and by arrangement; bhūtaṁ saṁvidhānena ca; Thieves, teaching, and female criminal, Theyyadesanacorī ca, Lack of permission is the thirteenth. ananuññātāya terasa.
These are the thirteen originations, Terasete samuṭṭhāna- The method thought out by the wise; nayā viññūhi cintitā; In regard to a single origination, Ekekasmiṁ samuṭṭhāne, Those that are alike are shown here. sadisā idha dissare.
1. Originations like the first offense entailing expulsion 2.1. Paṭhamapārājikasamuṭṭhāna
Sexual intercourse, semen, contact, Methunaṁ sukkasaṁsaggo, The first undetermined offense; aniyatā paṭhamikā; Arrived before, had prepared, Pubbūpaparipācitā, With a nun in private. raho bhikkhuniyā saha.
Lustful, and two in private, Sabhojane raho dve ca, Finger, playing in the water; aṅguli udake hasaṁ; Should he hit, and should he raise, Pahāre uggire ceva, And fifty-three on training. tepaññāsā ca sekhiyā.
Below the collar bone, village, lustful, Adhakkhagāmāvassutā, Palm, and dildo, cleaning; talamaṭṭhañca suddhikā; And completed the rainy-season residence, instruction, Vassaṁvuṭṭhā ca ovādaṁ, If she should not follow her mentor. nānubandhe pavattiniṁ.
These seventy-six training rules, Chasattati ime sikkhā, Done from body and mind; kāyamānasikā katā; All have one origination, Sabbe ekasamuṭṭhānā, Like the first offense entailing expulsion. paṭhamaṁ pārājikaṁ yathā.

2. Originations like the second offense entailing expulsion 2.2. Dutiyapārājikasamuṭṭhāna
Not given, form, super, Adinnaṁ viggahuttari, Indecent, his own needs; duṭṭhullā attakāminaṁ; Groundless, unrelated, Amūlā aññabhāgiyā, The second undetermined offense. aniyatā dutiyikā.
Should he take back, in intending, Acchinde pariṇāmane, Falsely, abusive, malicious talebearing; musā omasapesuṇā; Grave offense, should he dig the earth, Duṭṭhullā pathavīkhaṇe, Plant, with evasion, should he complain. bhūtaṁ aññāya ujjhāpe.
Throwing out, and sprinkling, Nikkaḍḍhanaṁ siñcanañca, For the sake of worldly gain, who has finished his meal; āmisahetu bhuttāvī; Come, disrespect, scaring, Ehi anādari bhiṁsā, And should he hide, life. apanidhe ca jīvitaṁ.
That one knows contains living beings, legal procedure, Jānaṁ sappāṇakaṁ kammaṁ, Less than, doing formal meetings with, expulsion; ūnasaṁvāsanāsanā; Legitimately, annoyance, Sahadhammikavilekhā, Deception, and with groundless. moho amūlakena ca.
Anxious, legitimate, gives out a robe, Kukkuccaṁ dhammikaṁ cīvaraṁ datvā, Should he divert to an individual; Pariṇāmeyya puggale; What to you, out-of-season, should she take back, Kiṁ te akālaṁ acchinde, Because of misunderstanding, and with hell. Duggahī nirayena ca.
Group, distribution, uncertain, Gaṇaṁ vibhaṅgaṁ dubbalaṁ, Robe season, ill at ease, dwelling place; kathināphāsupassayaṁ; Abuse, furious, keep for herself, Akkosacaṇḍī maccharī, And pregnant woman, breastfeeding woman. gabbhinī ca pāyantiyā.
Two years’ training, by the Sangha, Dvevassaṁ sikkhā saṅghena, And three on married girls; tayo ceva gihīgatā; And three on unmarried women, Kumāribhūtā tisso ca, Less than twelve, without approval. ūnadvādasasammatā.
Enough, difficult to live with, Alaṁ tāva sokāvāsaṁ, Consent, and every year, two; chandā anuvassā ca dve; These seventy training rules, Sikkhāpadā sattatime, Have three originations: samuṭṭhānā tikā katā.
From body and mind, not from speech, Kāyacittena na vācā, Or from speech and mind, not from body; vācācittaṁ na kāyikaṁ; Or they are produced from the three doors, Tīhi dvārehi jāyanti, As is the second offense entailing expulsion. pārājikaṁ dutiyaṁ yathā.

3. Originations like the offense for matchmaking 2.3. Sañcarittasamuṭṭhāna
Matchmaking, hut, dwelling, Sañcarī kuṭi vihāro, And washing, receiving; dhovanañca paṭiggaho; Asking, invites to take more than, Viññattuttari abhihaṭṭhuṁ, Of both, and with messenger. ubhinnaṁ dūtakena ca.
Silk, entirely, two parts, Kosiyā suddhadvebhāgā, Six years, sitting mat; chabbassāni nisīdanaṁ; They neglect, and money, Riñcanti rūpikā ceva, Two on various kinds. ubho nānappakārakā.
Fewer than five mends, rainy season, Ūnabandhanavassikā, Thread, and by assigning; suttaṁ vikappanena ca; Door, and giving, and sewing, Dvāradānasibbāni ca, Cookie, requisite, and fire. pūvapaccayajoti ca.
Precious things, needle, and bed, Ratanaṁ sūci mañco ca, Cotton down, sitting mat, and itch; tūlaṁ nisīdanakaṇḍu ca; Rainy-season, and by the standard, Vassikā ca sugatena, Asking, exchanging for something else. viññatti aññaṁ cetāpanā.
Two on belonging to the Sangha, two on collective, Dve saṅghikā mahājanikā dve, Individual, light, heavy; Puggalalahukā garu; Two on food scraps, and bathing robe, Dve vighāsā sāṭikā ca, And with a monastic robe. Samaṇacīvarena ca.
These exactly fifty rules, Samapaññāsime dhammā, Are produced for six reasons: chahi ṭhānehi jāyare; From body, not from speech or mind; Kāyato na vācācittā, From speech, not from body or mind; vācato na kāyamanā.
From body and speech, not from mind; Kāyavācā na ca cittā, From body and mind, not from speech; kāyacittā na vācikā; From speech and mind, not from body; Vācācittā na kāyena, Or they are produced from the three doors. tīhi dvārehi jāyare; They have six originations, Chasamuṭṭhānikā ete, As it is with matchmaking. sañcarittena sādisā.

4. Originations like the offense on pressing 2.4. Samanubhāsanāsamuṭṭhāna
Schism, those who side with, difficult to correct, Bhedānuvattadubbaca- Corrupter, grave, and view; dūsaduṭṭhulladiṭṭhi ca; Consent, and two on laughing loudly, Chandaṁ ujjagghikā dve ca, And two on noise, should not speak. dve ca saddā na byāhare.
The ground, on a low seat, standing, Chamā nīcāsane ṭhānaṁ, Behind, and next to the path; pacchato uppathena ca; Offenses, taking sides with, holding, Vajjānuvattigahaṇā, Should readmit, renouncing. osāre paccācikkhanā.
A, two on socializing, beating, Kismiṁ saṁsaṭṭhā dve vadhi, Should she unstitch, and with suffering; Visibbe dukkhitāya ca; Again socializing, should she not resolve, Puna saṁsaṭṭhā na vūpasame, And monastery, inviting correction. Ārāmañca pavāraṇā.
Every half, two on disciple, Anvaddhaṁ saha jīviniṁ dve, Robe, following. Cīvaraṁ anubandhanā; These thirty-seven rules Sattatiṁsa ime dhammā, Are from body, speech and mind; Kāyavācāya cittato; All have one origination, Sabbe ekasamuṭṭhānā, As the rule on pressing. Samanubhāsanā yathā.

5. Originations like the offense on the robe-making ceremony 2.5. Kathinasamuṭṭhāna
Three on the end of the robe season, Ubbhataṁ kathinaṁ tīṇi, The first on bowl, tonics; paṭhamaṁ pattabhesajjaṁ; And also haste, risky, Accekaṁ cāpi sāsaṅkaṁ, And two with departing. pakkamantena vā duve.
Dwelling place, one before another, Upassayaṁ paramparā, Not left over, invitation; anatirittaṁ nimantanā; Assignment, of a king, at the wrong time, Vikappaṁ rañño vikāle, Giving directions, and with wilderness. vosāsāraññakena ca.
Litigious, and collection, Ussayāsannicayañca, Before, after, and at the wrong time; pure pacchā vikāle ca; Five days, borrowed, Pañcāhikā saṅkamanī, And also two with lodging. dvepi āvasathena ca.
On the lower part of the body, and on a seat— Pasākhe āsane ceva, These twenty-nine tiṁsa ekūnakā ime; Are from body and speech, not from mind, Kāyavācā na ca cittā, Or they are produced from the three doors; tīhi dvārehi jāyare; All have two originations, Dvisamuṭṭhānikā sabbe, The same as with the robe-making ceremony. kathinena sahā samā.

6. Originations like the offense on wool 2.6. Eḷakalomasamuṭṭhāna
Wool, two on sleeping place, Eḷakalomā dve seyyā, Detachable, eating an almsmeal; āhacca piṇḍabhojanaṁ; Group, at the wrong time, store, Gaṇavikālasannidhi, With tooth cleaner, naked ascetic. dantaponena celakā.
(Mobilized) army, army, battle, Uyyuttaṁ senaṁ uyyodhi, Alcohol, bathing at less than; surā orena nhāyanā; On stains, two on acknowlegment, Dubbaṇṇe dve desanikā, Garlic, should she attend on, dancing. lasuṇupatiṭṭhe naccanā.
Bathing, sheet, sleeping place, Nhānamattharaṇaṁ seyyā, Within her own country, and so outside; antoraṭṭhe tathā bahi; During the rainy season, gallery, Antovassaṁ cittāgāraṁ, High couch, spinning yarn. āsandi suttakantanā.
Service, and personally, Veyyāvaccaṁ sahatthā ca, And with a monastery without monks; abhikkhukāvāsena ca; Sunshade, and vehicle, hip ornament, Chattaṁ yānañca saṅghāṇiṁ, Jewelry, scents, scented. alaṅkāraṁ gandhavāsitaṁ.
Nun, and trainee nun, Bhikkhunī sikkhamānā ca, Novice nun, and with female householder; sāmaṇerī gihiniyā; The offense for not wearing a chest wrap: Asaṅkaccikā āpatti, The forty-four rules cattārīsā catuttari.
Are from body, not from speech or mind, Kāyena na vācācittena, Or from body and mind, not from speech; kāyacittena na vācato; All have two originations, Dvisamuṭṭhānikā sabbe, The same as ‘wool’. samā eḷakalomikāti.

7. Originations like the offense for memorizing the Teaching 2.7. Padasodhammasamuṭṭhāna
Memorizing, except, not appointed, Padaññatra asammatā, And so with sunset; tathā atthaṅgatena ca; Two were spoken on worldly subjects, Tiracchānavijjā dve vuttā, And asking without permission. anokāso ca pucchanā.
These seven training rules Satta sikkhāpadā ete, Are from speech, not from body or mind; vācā na kāyacittato; Or they are produced from speech and mind, Vācācittena jāyanti, Not from body; na tu kāyena jāyare; All have two originations, Dvisamuṭṭhānikā sabbe, As in memorizing the Teaching. padasodhammasadisā.

8. Originations like the offense for traveling 2.8. Addhānasamuṭṭhāna
Traveling, boat, fine, Addhānanāvaṁ paṇītaṁ, With a woman, should she remove; mātugāmena saṁhare; Grain, and invited, Dhaññaṁ nimantitā ceva, And the eight to be acknowledged. aṭṭha ca pāṭidesanī.
These fifteen training rules Sikkhā pannarasa ete, Are from body, not from speech or mind; kāyā na vācā na manā; Or they are produced from body and speech, Kāyavācāhi jāyanti, Not from mind; na te cittena jāyare.
Or they are produced from body and mind, Kāyacittena jāyanti, Not from speech; na te jāyanti vācato; Or from body, speech and mind—Kāyavācāhi cittena, The fourfold origination; samuṭṭhānā catubbidhā; Laid down through the Buddha’s knowledge, Paññattā buddhañāṇena, The same as with the rule on traveling. addhānena sahā samā.

9. Originations like the offense on a group of traveling thieves 2.9. Theyyasatthasamuṭṭhāna
A group of traveling thieves, eavesdropping, Theyyasatthaṁ upassuti, And with asking for bean curry; sūpaviññāpanena ca; Night, and concealed, out in the open, Rattichannañca okāsaṁ, With a cul-de-sac: these seven ete byūhena sattamā.
Are produced from body and mind, Kāyacittena jāyanti, Not from speech; na te jāyanti vācato; Or they are produced from the three doors. Tīhi dvārehi jāyanti, They have two originations; dvisamuṭṭhānikā ime; As the origination of a group of traveling thieves, Theyyasatthasamuṭṭhānā, Taught by the Kinsman of the Sun. desitādiccabandhunā.

10. Originations like the offenses on giving a Teaching 2.10. Dhammadesanāsamuṭṭhāna
The true Teaching to someone holding a sunshade, Chattapāṇissa saddhammaṁ, The Buddhas do not instruct; na desenti tathāgatā; Nor to someone holding a staff, Evameva daṇḍapāṇissa, Or to someone holding a knife, or a weapon. satthaāvudhapāṇinaṁ.
Shoes, sandals, vehicle, Pādukupāhanā yānaṁ, Lying down, and clasping their knees; seyyapallatthikāya ca; Headdress, and covered head: Veṭhitoguṇṭhito ceva, Eleven rules, not less. ekādasamanūnakā.
Produced from speech and mind, Vācācittena jāyanti, Not from body; na te jāyanti kāyato; All have one origination, Sabbe ekasamuṭṭhānā, Like the offenses on giving a teaching. samakā dhammadesane.

11. Originations like the offense for telling truthfully 2.11. Bhūtārocanasamuṭṭhāna
Truthfully: produced from the body, Bhūtaṁ kāyena jāyati, Not from speech or mind; na vācā na ca cittato; Or it originates from speech, Vācato ca samuṭṭhāti, Not from body or mind; na kāyā na ca cittato.
Or it is produced from body and speech, Kāyavācāya jāyati, Not from mind; na tu jāyati cittato; So informing of what is true Bhūtārocanakā nāma, Is produced for three reasons. tīhi ṭhānehi jāyati.

12. Originations like the offense for the admission of a female criminal 2.12. Corivuṭṭhāpanasamuṭṭhāna
A female criminal: produced from speech or mind, Corī vācāya cittena, Not from body; na taṁ jāyati kāyato; Or produced from the three doors. Jāyati tīhi dvārehi, This offense for admitting a female criminal corivuṭṭhāpanaṁ idaṁ; Has two originations, Akataṁ dvisamuṭṭhānaṁ, As spoken by the King of the Teaching. dhammarājena bhāsitaṁ.

13. Originations like the offense for lack of permission 2.13. Ananuññātasamuṭṭhāna
Lack of permission: from speech, Ananuññātaṁ vācāya, Not from body or mind; na kāyā na ca cittato; Or produced from body and speech, Jāyati kāyavācāya, Not from mind; na taṁ jāyati cittato.
Or produced from speech and mind, Jāyati vācācittena, Not from body; na taṁ jāyati kāyato; Or produced from the three doors. Jāyati tīhi dvārehi, One that has four bases is not done. akataṁ catuṭhānikaṁ.
Originations like the offense for lack of permission are finished. Ananuññātasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
